The emphasis Jimmy Carter placed on peace has been vindicated, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos wrote on Tuesday in a book of condolences at the US embassy in Nicosia.

“Offering my sincere condolences at @USEmbassyCyprus on the passing of President James Earl Carter Jr,” he wrote.

Kombos added that “the 39th President of the US and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has left his mark as the carrier of a message that resonates clearly even today.

“Carter’s emphasis on peace, human rights, equality, education, healthcare and the environment has been vindicated. A President with strong convictions, that was guided by principle,” Kombos wrote.

He added, “President Carter devoted his life to public service and is an example of unwavering commitment. May he rest in peace.”

Carter, the earnest Georgia peanut farmer who as US president struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on December 29. He was 100.
