The agriculture ministry announced on Wednesday that criminal investigations into firefighting aircraft contracts are underway. This follows a complaint submitted to Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, prompting an administrative investigation into the matter.
The investigation, initiated by the minister, scrutinised all contracts related to firefighting aircraft dating back to 2017. Its aim was to uncover any actions or omissions that could constitute disciplinary or even criminal offences.
The findings of the investigation were submitted to the minister earlier in December and subsequently forwarded to the attorney-general’s office.
The attorney-general’s office then referred the case to the police for further investigation.
Despite the ongoing investigations, the firefighting aircraft programme remains operational under the Republic’s management.
