Newly appointed secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Thomas Kazakos on Thursday met with president Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace.

Following the meeting, Victoras Papadopoulos, director of the president’s press office, briefed the media, stating that the president had congratulated Kazakos on behalf of the government for his election to the prestigious role.

This makes Kazakos the first Cypriot to lead the global organisation, and Kazakos was selected unanimously by the ICS board of directors from a field of internationally recognised candidates.

Papadopoulos emphasised that Kazakos’ appointment is a significant honour for Cyprus, marking the culmination of his 30-year contribution to the country’s maritime sector.

“It is a very honorable election for our homeland,” Papadopoulos added.

The president also expressed his full support for Kazakos, wishing him success in his new role and offering his assistance in advancing Cyprus’ maritime interests.

“Shipping is vital to our economy, and Cyprus has long been a pioneering force in this industry,” Papadopoulos noted.

Christodoulides is expected to attend the official ceremony marking Kazakos’ assumption of duties in June, which will take place in Athens.

The event is anticipated to be a significant moment for both Cyprus and the international maritime community.

Headquartered in London, the ICS represents national shipowners’ associations responsible for more than 80 per cent of the world’s merchant fleet.

The organisation plays an important role in advocating for the shipping industry at major international bodies, including the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
