The Paralimni and Dherynia municipality on Friday announced that a total of 186 bus stops across the municipality will be replaced with more modern facilities.

The installation of new bus stops is set to begin on Tuesday, with the municipality saying the new bus stops will be “modern stops which will use telematics with real-time bus arrival information”.

It added that it hopes to replace 72 bus stops in the Protaras area before the start of the tourist season, noting that those bus stops are “unfortunately in a poor condition” at present.

After this, it said, “the remaining bus stops within municipal boundaries will be replaced”.

“The placement of the new bus stops is expected to offer a new experience to the travelling public, while at the same time helping to achieve a reduction in traffic and the pollution caused by exhaust fumes by way of people using public transport,” it added.

At the same time, it said, it is working “in full cooperation” with Famagusta district transport company Osea with the aim of conducting a hub bus station – something that “the state must promote as it did in other towns in Cyprus”.
