Cyprus’ mountain roads were reopened to all traffic on Saturday afternoon.

The police said the roads are open to all vehicles, “but slippery”, and that as such, “drivers are urged to be particularly careful”.

Earlier, cold and icy weather in the island’s mountainous regions had seen the police impose restrictions on the types of vehicles which can access the mountain roads.

With the roads icy and snow remaining settled in Troodos, mountain roads were only open to vehicles with four-wheel drive or those with snow chains on their tyres.

The mountain which were impacted by the restrictions were as follows:

  • Platres to Troodos
  • Karvouna to Troodos
  • Prodromos to Troodos
  • Kalopanayiotis to Moutoullas
  • Pedoulas to Prodromos
  • Prodromos to Lemythou
  • Kakopetria to Pedoulas via Pinewood
  • Kakopetria to Karvounas
  • Kykkos to Kampos via Pedoulas

The police also called on those travelling on Cyprus’ road network to observe the rules of the road and comply with traffic signs so as to avoid traffic accidents.

Temperatures only rose to two degrees Celsius in the mountains on Saturday, with snow expected to fall once again overnight, with temperatures to drop to a low of minus three degrees Celsius.
