The Cyprus police have officially handed a report to Uefa’s match observer detailing security concerns at the GSP Stadium, adding further uncertainty ahead of Thursday’s Uefa conference league play-off match between Omonia and Pafos FC.
The issue revolves around the stadium’s CCTV system, which has been flagged since June 2024. police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou confirmed that 30 of the 112 cameras are non-functional, while others record in low resolution.
Late on Wednesday night, it was confirmed that a meeting would take place on Thursday morning to make a final decision on the fate of the match and the measures to be taken.
Additionally, one of the main servers is out of order, raising concerns about monitoring capabilities.
“As the police, our primary concern is public safety, which is directly linked to stadium security. These problems cannot be overlooked,” Lambrianidou stated.
She clarified that the police had raised the issue in a formal letter on 23 January 2025, giving officials two weeks to address it. No action was taken.
“We are simply following protocol. The decision on whether the match proceeds rests with Uefa,” she said.
Thursday’s match is not just a local rivalry, it is part of a historic moment for Cypriot football. Cyprus is the only country still represented in the conference league with three teams. Alongside Omonia and Pafos FC, Apoel face Slovenia’s Celje in an away match.
The Omonia-Pafos fixture, kicking off at 10pm, has attracted widespread interest beyond the clubs’ own fanbases. Despite the ongoing dispute, authorities remain hopeful that the game will proceed as planned.
Meanwhile, tensions between the police and the Cyprus football association (CFA) have resurfaced over fan travel restrictions. Sources told the Cyprus news agency (CNA) that the CFA evaluates police requests for travel bans on a case-by-case basis.
“When the police provide a justified request for travel restrictions, the CFA accepts it. However, when the request lacks sufficient grounds, it is rejected, as happened last weekend,” sources revealed.
As Uefa officials assess the situation, all eyes are on whether the match will proceed smoothly or face last-minute complications.
