Negotiators from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities will meet again on Thursday as preparations continue for expanded talks in Geneva next month.

According to the Cyprus news agency (CNA), the meeting between Menelaos Menelaou and Güneş Onar will take place at 11am. It will serve as a follow-up to their ongoing discussions ahead of the broader meeting planned in Switzerland.

The upcoming Geneva talks are seen as a significant step in efforts to resolve the long-standing division of Cyprus. While the United Nations is organising the meeting, key details are still being finalised.

President Nikos Christodoulides revealed last Saturday that the UN had provided an update, mentioning “some minor changes regarding the dates.” He added that the UN is expected to announce the official schedule soon.

The island has been divided since 1974, following a Turkish invasion triggered by a Greek-backed coup. Efforts to reunify the island under a federal structure have stalled in recent years, despite several rounds of negotiations.

Diplomatic sources suggest the upcoming Geneva meeting could provide a fresh opportunity to break the deadlock. However, tensions remain over key issues such as governance, security, and territorial adjustments.

Both sides are under pressure to show progress, as the international community watches closely. The UN has urged all parties to approach the talks with a spirit of compromise and a commitment to finding a lasting solution.

As Thursday’s meeting approaches, hopes remain cautious but persistent that dialogue will pave the way for renewed efforts toward peace on the divided island.
