The new decree issued by the agriculture ministry for the gradual increase of the goat and sheep milk content in halloumi is a step in the right direction and helps cover the domestic demand for the PDO cheese, as well as exports, the association of cheesemakers said on Wednesday.
The cheesemakers added that the software registering the ratio for goat and sheep milk in halloumi since October 2024 has proved to be a decisive move to safeguard the viability of exports.
In 2024, halloumi exports reached 42,427 tonnes valued at €324 million, compared to 39,078 tonnes at €315 million in 2023, the cheesemakers said.
The association assured it would continue to support the sector and all those involved, with the aim of securing “the viable course of halloumi in international markets”.
The sector, the cheesemakers said, employs over 15,000 people and was thus “a decisive pillar of the economy.”
