Cyprus remains steadfast in its pursuit of freedom and reunification through assertive realism and clear political will, President Nikos Christodoulides said at a commemorative event on Tuesday evening.

Recent developments in Geneva reaffirmed the government’s tireless efforts to break the deadlock and restart substantive negotiations, he said.

Speaking at an event honouring heroes of Greek and Cypriot struggles for independence, marked annually on March 25 and April 1, the president said, “if we truly wish to honor their struggles, we must remain constantly vigilant and do everything possible to liberate and reunify our country, which has been occupied by Turkey since 1974.”

The lesson from previous struggles is to continue “to claim, by all means, our homeland’s freedom through a viable, functional, and resilient solution,” he added.

The recent Geneva developments were a proof of the government’s tireless efforts, Christodoulides said.

“We approach this development with absolute seriousness, aligning it with our strategic approach—assertive realism, a doctrine pioneered by [ex-president] Glafcos Clerides—our unwavering political determination, and Cyprus’ internationally acknowledged role in the broader region,” he said.
