Officials from the agriculture ministry are expected to carry out onsite assessment of crop damages in Paphos on Monday, caused by severe weather over the weekend.
Hailstorms on Sunday wreaked havoc for farmers in certain mountain communities, head of the Paphos district organisation (EOA) Charalambos Pittokopitis told the Cyprus News Agency.
The most severely affected areas were Ayios Photios, Koilinia, Galataria and Amargeti, Pittokopitis said.
The EOA head said that according to initial information, vineyards and orchards had been utterly decimated. He called for immediate state assistance to the affected producers.
Elsewhere on the island, heavy rains caused power outages, flooding and landslides.
On Sunday afternoon eight areas of Limassol lost power due to a network failure, while nine communities were left without power in Paphos. The electricity authority (EAC) said power was restored after a few hours.
The fire service received 18 weather-related calls by 5pm, including for flooded basements and requests to tow immobilised vehicles. Street flooding was seen in Makedonitissa, Engomi, Archangelos and old Strovolos in Nicosia.
Crews from volunteer group CYSupport and Nicosia EOA worked to assist drivers and open stormwater drains.
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prounzos said the municipality had acted pre-emptively by clearing drains on Friday when the initial weather warning was issued, however, renewed flooding in parts of the city underscores the urgent need for flood control projects.
Efforts to enact the said projects are being hampered by a dispute over which authority should be in charge and confusion over the role of the EOA in the matter, he said.
On the road network, conditions were particularly difficult in Troodos, where landslides and water accumulation at various locations necessitated road closures.
Accumulation of hail and icy conditions overnight led to the Pedoulas-Prodromos road remaining open only to vehicles with four-wheel drive or equipped with snow-chains.
