The village events just keep on coming. As we dive deeper into the calendar year and autumn makes its appearance, village festivals and cultural nights will enrich the local events’ agenda. Filled with Cypriot tradition and highlighting rural life, events outside the city celebrate ‘place’ and its people. Uniting local colours, music, village character and new talent is an upcoming open-air event that will soon take place in Vavla village in the Larnaca district.

The Outdoor Cultural Evening in Vavla will transform the village amphitheatre into an open stage for art and tradition. Organised by the Association for the Development of Vavla, the event promises a unique and one-night-only evening “where cinema, theatre and music meet under the night sky.”

Mark your calendars and make room this weekend for this unique event coming up on Saturday.

The night will begin with a short film. The Foreigner by Alethea Avramis will be screened at 8.30pm – a tender comedy that reflects on life in a small community and the way we perceive the ‘foreigner’ among us.

Next, the theatre performance Oi Matziellemenes will follow, written by Giorgos Papakonstantinou. The play is an initiative of the informal youth group MPOEM and begins with two young women who meet in a café and, through their conversation, bring to life three emblematic female figures from Cypriot folk tradition: Androniki, Rigena and Lygeri. These heroines return so that their stories and voices may be heard. Bringing the tale to life on stage are Androulla Mavrou and Ioanna Athanasiadou.

At 10pm, a music session presenting Mediterranean melodies through the eyes of the performers will serenade Vavla visitors. The all-female ensemble from Cyprus ANeraides featuring Konstantina Fella will take audiences on a journey through Mediterranean melodies from Smyrna, rembetika, island tunes, and Cypriot songs, to music from Southern Italy.

On stage, performing an exciting union of instruments will be Anna Mosfili on vocals and idiophone percussion, Marianna Moumdji on kanun and backing vocals and Konstantina Fella on guitar and backing vocals.

Doors to the event open at 8pm and guests will be able to enjoy all of this artistry, completely for free as there is no entrance fee. Simply head early to grab a spot at the amphitheatre. And for those feeling thirsty, a bar with refreshing drinks and a snack stand will operate onsite.
