What happens when Cyprus’ rich folk heritage collides with the techniques of contemporary classical music? This is the very question the TratSik String Quartet will explore in their upcoming concert, where new works by five Cypriot composers will premiere.

The concert brings together talented young musicians and composers with a shared vision: to reimagine tradition through the lens of today’s music-making. While the pieces are rooted in the melodies, colours and rhythms of traditional Cypriot folk music, they are shaped using contemporary compositional methods. The result is a fascinating interplay between old and new, familiar and unexpected, that showcases the evolving identity of Cypriot sound.

Ready to present their creations on Friday at the Amiantos Cultural Centre are violinists Giorgos Chatzigeorgiou and Spyros Spyrou, violist Nikolas Efthymiou, and cellist Doros Zisimos.

The concert begins at 7.30pm with a programme that features compositions by Alexandros Darna, Antis Skordis, Apollonas Kalamenios, Aris Antoniadis and Dimitris Tsoukkas – each offering their own perspective on how tradition can inspire contemporary expression.

From bold rhythmic textures to lyrical passages that echo folk tunes, the pieces aim to push boundaries while remaining deeply connected to Cyprus’ cultural roots. Beyond an evening of music, the event is also a celebration of Cypriot creativity and a chance for audiences to observe the co-existence of contemporary music and traditional heritage.
