What are the voices of the sea? What tales does the ocean hide? A one-of-a-kind experiential musical storytelling workshop for children is coming to Larnaca this Saturday as part of the celebrations for the European Maritime Day.

Held at the Archaeological Museum of Larnaca, The Voice of the Sea workshop will be a participatory experience for young visitors aged five to eight using sounds, rhythms and improvisation. Through storytelling, music and physical expression, a group of educators will bring the story’s characters to life and help children co-create their own original musical narrative.

The story is inspired by the fairytale The Fisherman and the Mermaid and will be animated by Marina Katsaris, storyteller and theatre educator, Christina Charalambidou, music educator, and Rebecca Katsaris, educator.

Emphasising imagination, empathy, collaboration and creativity, the workshop is based on the principles of atonal music. It draws inspiration from the archaeological exhibit Charonia variegata, an impressive seashell from the museum’s permanent collection, thus creating a living link between mythology, imagination, and our island’s cultural heritage. Two sessions will be held this Saturday, a morning one in English at 10.30am and a 12pm session in Greek.
