The Kato Pyrgos dam in Tylliria overflowed on Monday after days of rain saw it reach full capacity over the weekend.
“We express our particular satisfaction with the overflow of the dam, as three months ago the cleaning work was completed,” Kato Pyrgos mayor Nikos Kleanthous said.
The cleaning works were carried out in October, marking the first time it had been carried out since its construction under British colonial rule in 1957.
“At least 90,000 cubic meters of bearing materials that were inside the dam were removed,” he said, adding that this has resulted in an increase in the dam’s water capacity.
The agriculture ministry confirmed the dam’s overflow, citing it as an example of successful cooperation between the relevant bodies, crucial to ensuring the dam’s capacity to accumulate and retain water was fully restored.
“After decades, the dam was cleaned of sediment so that it can once again collect and store water,” it added.
The ministry declared that the cost of irrigation projects to support primary production and the sustainable management of water resources totalled €1.15 million in 2025.
“The current image of the dam is proof that when there is a plan, cooperation and political will, chronic problems find solutions,” the ministry added.
