Firefighters responded to dozens of incidents across the island over the past 24 hours, including house fires in Aglandjia and Kalavasos that caused property damage but no injuries.
At 4.56am on Wednesday morning, authorities received a report of a fire at a residence in Aglandjia. The blaze was extinguished by the homeowner’s domestic helper before the fire brigade arrived.
The fire originated in a small iconostasis inside the house, causing damage to the structure itself, the icons and the surrounding painted areas. An investigation into the cause of the fire is pending.
In a separate incident late on Tuesday, part of the wooden roof of a house in Kalavasos was destroyed by a fire attributed to heat loss from a fireplace chimney.
The fire brigade said it received a call at 6.43pm, prompting a response from the Vasilikos fire station with two fire engines. The fire was brought under control by 7.50pm.
While the wooden roof sustained damage from fire and heat, the contents of the house were not affected.
According to an official statement, the fire service responded to a total of 39 calls in the 24 hours up to 6am on Wednesday morning. Of these, 20 involved fires and 19 related to special services.
