Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain took significant strides towards the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday, securing commanding 2-0 first-leg victories over Barcelona and Liverpool respectively.

At the Camp Nou, Atletico delivered a clinical performance to punish 10-man Barcelona, combining defensive discipline with ruthless finishing to seize control of the tie. Despite dominating possession for long spells, Barcelona struggled to break down Diego Simeone’s well-drilled side and were ultimately undone by a pivotal moment just before halftime.

The match turned in the 42nd minute when Pau Cubarsi was sent off after hauling down Giuliano Simeone as the last man, with the decision upgraded from yellow to red following a VAR review. From the resulting free kick, Julian Alvarez produced a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning effort from 25 metres into the top corner deep into first-half stoppage time.

Barcelona had earlier threatened through Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal, with Rashford seeing an effort ruled out for offside and later striking the crossbar from a free kick. However, clear chances were scarce against Atletico’s compact five-man defensive line.

Simeone’s side remained dangerous on the counter and doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Matteo Ruggeri’s cross found Alexander Sorloth, who volleyed home from close range to seal an impressive away victory.

“We’re delighted with the win, but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Antoine Griezmann. “The semi-final is still a long way off.”

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo struck a more defiant tone, insisting his side could still turn the tie around despite the setback.

Meanwhile, in Paris, PSG produced a dominant display to outclass Liverpool at the Parc des Princes, leaving the Premier League side with a daunting task ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

Luis Enrique’s men controlled proceedings from the outset, blending patient possession with bursts of attacking intensity that Liverpool struggled to contain. Desire Doue opened the scoring after just 11 minutes, his curling effort taking a slight deflection off Ryan Gravenberch on its way past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool, still reeling from a heavy FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, set up cautiously with a back three and Mohamed Salah starting on the bench. The approach did little to stem PSG’s momentum, as the visitors failed to register a single shot before halftime.

PSG continued to press after the break, with Ousmane Dembele and Hugo Ekitike both going close before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia produced a moment of individual brilliance in the 65th minute. The Georgian forward surged into the area, weaved past defenders, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home to double the lead.

Liverpool improved slightly in the second half but still failed to register a shot on target, while PSG squandered further chances that could have put the tie beyond doubt.

Both Atletico and PSG now carry strong advantages into their respective second legs, with Barcelona and Liverpool facing significant challenges if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
