Police arrested eight people across Cyprus on Thursday night during targeted prevention operations carried out nationwide, while issuing 295 traffic fines for various offences.
In a statement on Friday, police said they maintained an intensified presence across the island overnight, carrying out organised patrols in key urban areas aimed at preventing serious crime, maintaining public order and enhancing the public’s sense of security.
According to police, the operations resulted in the arrest of eight individuals for a range of offences, including theft by employee, illegal stay in Cyprus, carrying a knife, unlawful possession of drugs and assaulting a police officer.
As part of the operations, officers stopped and checked 629 drivers and 131 passengers during the night. They also carried out inspections at 44 premises as part of efforts to tackle criminal activity, leading to six reports of offences.
Police said that 295 traffic violations were recorded during road policing checks, while six cases involving suspected traffic offences remain under investigation.
Among the violations recorded were 83 cases of speeding. Police also impounded four vehicles as part of their investigations.
A total of 95 alcohol tests were carried out, resulting in three drivers being reported for drink-driving offences.
Police said such operations continue on a daily basis, with increased police presence, targeted checks and immediate operational action aimed at preventing and suppressing crime, protecting the public and maintaining public order.
