A 63-year-old British man died after falling ill while diving in the Pernera area of Ayia Napa, police said on Monday.

According to the police, the man was diving at around 3.15pm on Saturday when he became unwell and was taken to a floating platform.

The diving instructor who was accompanying him, together with lifeguards in the area, provided first aid while an ambulance was called to the scene.

He was subsequently taken to Famagusta general hospital, where doctors continued efforts to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead.

Ayia Napa police station is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

The incident comes less than two weeks after another British man died after suddenly falling ill while on holiday in Cyprus.

Paulo Brockway, 44, from Cardiff, died on September 16, the day he and his fiancée were due to fly home after a holiday marking their third anniversary. His fiancée, Kerry Debono, told the BBC that doctors in Cyprus said he had suffered a cardiac arrest following pancreatitis.

The couple had planned to return to Cyprus to marry after falling in love with the island during their trip.

In August, an 88-year-old British national living in Pachna died after becoming trapped in a fire when his vehicle became stuck on a dirt road near Avgorou. A post-mortem found that he had died from burns after the fire spread from nearby dry vegetation to his vehicle.
