A 13-year-old suffered an eye injury after teenagers threw a firecracker in a Strovolols park, police said on Monday.

According to the police, three 17-year-olds threw the firecracker while driving past the park at 7pm on Sunday. The small explosion injured the 13-year-old who was there with his friends.

The child had to visit an ophthalmologist and received medical treatment.

Police charged the 17-year-old driver of the car in writing for several traffic offences.

Meanwhile, unknown people started a fire in the yard of a school in Lakatamia and then assaulted officers.

Members of the police and fire service were called to the scene at around 6pm to put out the fire.

When they got there, a group of youngsters, wearing face coverings, allegedly threw rocks at them.

Officers called for backup when some of the youngsters grabbed wooden sticks and moved aggressively towards them, the force said. The culprits escaped on foot.

The fire was put out without causing damages to the school.
