Cusco: ‘navel of the world’ and ancient capital of the Incas

In this video, we follow dedicated travellers, brothers Alex and Marko Ayling, as they explore Cusco, a city in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes.

Known to the Incas as the “navel of the world”, Cusco was built by the Spanish on the remains of Inca temples and palaces, and is as rich in human activity today as it must have been at the height of the empire.

Small wonder then, that Cusco is considered the undisputed archaeological capital of South America; it is also the gateway to the impressive 15th-century Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

In 1983, Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
