Save Your Hood group tackles Pedieos riverbed

short pedieos

A group of Nicosia residents spend last Sunday morning cleaning up Pedieos riverbed, following reports of large amounts of rubbish dumped in the area.

Large pieces of wood, plastic and other pieces of garbage were picked up by the small group of Save Your Hood volunteers. The masked-up team met at 10am on Sunday at Strovolos municipal parking.

The initiative came as the agriculture ministry announced that efforts are underway for the removal of an estimated 250 tonnes of rubbish dumped in the Pedieos riverbed from residents who refuse to use the district’s green points.

“I would like to congratulate all those with whose help we did this wonderful work! Well done to all,” the moderator of the social media page wrote and wished health and love to the volunteers.

Save your Hood is an initiative started in Limassol inspired by the group under the same name operating in Greece, aiming to promote environmental awareness among the general public and encourage them to participate in clean-up activities.

During the pandemic, the volunteers send an SMS for physical exercise to 8998 using the number 6, to excuse their movement and pick up trash from beaches and parks nationwide.

As of February 22, a team of 304 volunteers from the group gathered 108,537 litres of garbage from 24 actions in 24 different municipalities.
