Lush art in difficult times

The past year has had its fair share of difficult times. It’s affected everyone we know and don’t know. Business owners, employees, artists… Fitting to the times, an exhibition called Lush Art in Difficult Times is set to open on April 17. The 13^th edition of the art exhibition series is coming up at Isnotgallery in Nicosia, featuring 20 artists of varied practices.

The series was inaugurated in 2008 under the title Cheap Art, which aimed at caustically commenting on the economic affluence of that era and the bubbles this had created. Shortly afterwards followed the financial crisis with the collapse of companies and investment banks.

In the years that followed, an economic and consequently social confusion prevailed. This reached a peak in Cyprus in March 2013 with the haircut of deposits. During the beginning of the period of the domestic economic crisis, the title of the exhibition was changed to Lush Art in Austere Times. Here, the phrase ‘austere times’ outlined the prevailing social sentiment as well as everyone’s fears. Having spent seven years with this title a need came to change it and give it once again an imperative name: Lush Art in Difficult Times.

In this year’s edition, which will continue until the end of May, the works of 20 artists of numerous backgrounds and styles are being showcased. Painting and sketching, mixed media works, ceramics and more make up the main body of the exhibits this year. The purpose of this series of exhibitions has been, and remains, to present works of art at affordable prices. This year, the prices of the presented works start at €50, with a maximum price of €500.
