Coronavirus: Vaccine portal crashes minutes after opening (updated)

crash

The vaccination portal opened for 61 to 63 year olds on Thursday morning but crashed again just minutes later, the second time the same age group has been frozen out because of technical problems created by a surge in demand by multiple users trying to book a slot for the same person.

The portal will reopen at 2.30pm and will remain open until 8pm, an official announcement said.

“Attempted again today to book online for 61 to 63 years but yet again it’s crashed for this age group. Really annoying and frustrating as this happened last week,” one user said.

It is the second time in a week the portal has crashed, not allowing people to book a slot. The same age group that had a problem a week ago on Wednesday.

A total of 9,707 slots were open for AstraZeneca and Pfizer injections.

In a written announcement, the deputy ministry of innovation said the portal had been temporarily put out of action when multiple users selected the same appointment at the same vaccination centre for the same beneficiary at the same time.

“The vaccination portal can host up to 35,000 users at the same time. Today, April 15 and while the number of potential beneficiaries was about 26,000, there was a multiple number of associated users around 7.30am leading the system to overload and not respond,” it said.

And it appealed for only one application to be made per beneficiary to prevent the system overloading and inconveniencing the public.

Deputy minister Kyriacos Kokkinos said on Tuesday that the portal had been upgraded and could handle 30,000 to 35,000 users at the same time.

The health ministry said on Wednesday that up to April 13, there have been a total of 193,537 vaccinations, of which 137,004 were for the first dose and 56,533 with both. From December 2020 to June 2021, Cyprus will have taken delivery of one million doses of vaccines against the coronavirus, it added.
