Four people were arrested on Sunday morning after two police officers were attacked and needed hospital treatment, after they tried to break up a party in Paphos.

The four, aged 25, 26 and 27 and 47 are being investigated for holding an illegal gathering, causing grievous and actual body harm to police officers as well as threatening them.

According to police, officers received a report at around 7:30pm on Saturday that a large number of people were concentrated in the back yard of three adjoining houses at Inia village, having a party.

After sending a patrol car with two officers, a firefighter and an army officer, police found a gathering of some 20 to 25 people, in which the 47-year-old owner of the residence was told to break up the party.

Nonetheless, half an hour later, police received yet another report that the gathering was still ongoing. Sending a patrol car for a second time, as soon as officers arrived at the scene, they found the owner along with seven other people were still there.

The arrival of the police seemed to not go down well, as some of the attendees reacted angrily to the news that they were to be booked and began to attack the policemen, assaulting them, threatening them and swearing.

Two of the police officers sustained injuries that required them to be treated at Paphos hospital. Specifically, one fractured his left shoulder while the other was being treated for injuries sustained after receiving a number of blows to his face and lower lip. The firefighter suffered from abrasions. All have since been allowed to leave the hospital.

Firefighters and the army have also been roped in patrols as part of coronavirus measure implementations.

Police investigations continue.
