Police carried out more than 300 checks across Cyprus on Sunday, the first day of the hunting season, resulting in 12 on-the-spot fines for various offences.

The violations included transporting assembled hunting guns in vehicles, hunting game in prohibited areas and carrying hunting guns in areas where hunting is banned.

Meanwhile, Stroumbi police are investigating two men, aged 39 and 42, for the alleged illegal possession and transportation of hunting guns.

The pair were spotted by game service officers hunting in a prohibited area and were issued on-the-spot fines for pursuing game and carrying hunting guns in an area where hunting is prohibited.

A separate investigation into the alleged illegal possession and transportation of the weapons is ongoing.

Police said checks would continue throughout the hunting season.
