Bell-casting: a centuries-old craft in the modern era

The oldest Austrian family business is situated in Innsbruck, and here, since 1599, bells and works of art made of bronze have been cast by the Grassmayer bell foundry.

Yet despite their impressive history, the Grassmayers are by no means dusty or old-fashioned. To compete against international rivals and cheaper bell production companies, they are constantly on the lookout for the “Stradivarius among bells”.

Their efforts to maintain market appeal while keeping their work relevant see them blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology. Thus, while continuing to employ the old family recipe for the bell material, workflow includes modern-day refinements, such as heat-resistant protective clothing derived from aerospace research.
