Old ID cards to be scrapped

Holders of old ID cards without an expiration date will be able to use them until August 2026, the civil registry and migration department said on Thursday.

Old ID cards without an expiration date will remain valid until August 3, 2026, with the department calling on people who are using them to arrange for their replacement before that date.

The repeal is mandatory based on European regulations, the announcement said, with the aim to enhancing the security of identity cards of EU citizens and residence documents.

Other types of identity cards, which have an expiration date, continue to be valid until their expiration date, the department added.
