Cyprus to host environmental UN ministerial summit

Ministers present the summit on Tuesday

Cyprus will host the 9th Ministerial Summit for the Environment and Sustainable Development Education of the Economic and Financial Committee of the UN in October 2022, Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou said on Tuesday.

A briefing meeting about the summit took place at the ministry and Prodromou said the agenda includes issues such as circular economy and education on sustainable development and tourism. He said that it is an honour for our country to host this international summit.

According to Prodromou, the summit was due to be held in 2021 but was postponed due to the pandemic, and will take place at the Filoxenia Centre in Nicosia, bringing together about 1,000 participants to discuss the 2030 sustainability plan of the UN and especially the Mediterranean.

Prodromou explained that various ministries are involved and a committee has been set up to coordinate.

The minister said the Mediterranean region is largely affected by the climate crisis and therefore the issues to be discussed are or the utmost significance for Cyprus.

Environment Minister Costas Kadis said that Cyprus will be in the spotlight, adding that all documents to be discussed and agreed during the Summit will be the compass of the UN for the years to come.
