Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili visited the mediaeval Georgian Orthodox monastery in Gialia, Paphos, on Wednesday as part of her official trip to Cyprus.

Zourabichvili met with President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday, where the two countries’ bilateral relations were discussed – but special focus was placed on the trip to the monastery in the Paphos district.

The tenth century monastery is located near Polis Chrysochous, and appears to have been in use as recently as 1935, until it was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake.

It was most recently identified in 1981 by a Georgian scholar who followed clues left by medieval Georgian accounts.
