Man arrested for helping people enter Republic illegally

A 28-year-old man believed to have helped three migrants enter the Republic illegally, was arrested on Friday, police said on Saturday.

This is the eighth such case that has been investigated since last August, police said.

According to the police, after a tip off, officers stopped a car in a Larnaca area, driven by the 28-year-old for a check.

In it were also two boys aged 15 and 16 and a 20-year-old man and it later emerged they had arrived on the island illegally. It is believed the 28-yesr-old picked up the three migrants from the buffer zone.

The three migrants told police that they had paid €2,000 a compatriot of theirs to arrange for their transport from their country to Cyprus.

The 28-year-old was arrested for helping individuals enter the Republic illegally.

After the social welfare services were notified about the minors arranges were made for their transfer to a reception centre.

This is the eighth such case since August, police said, four of which were filed in court and the rest are under investigation. Nine people in total were arrested in connection with these cases.
