A fire near the communities of Archimandrita and Maronas in the Paphos district was brought under control after burning 20 hectares of dry vegetation and some trees, fire services spokesman Andreas Kettis said on Twitter on Wednesday.

The blaze broke out a few hours earlier in an inaccessible area, with some fronts still burning, fanned by strong winds

Kettis had said that six fire trucks,  three each from the fire service and the forestry department, were being assisted by a police helicopter in battling the flames.

The effort was later boosted by a fire truck from Limassol as the biggest part of the fire was brought under control.

However, one front raging in a ravine remained out of control, Kettis said in a later update.

Firefighters will remain and work throughout the night to deal with any re-ignitions, he said.

The causes of the fire are being investigated in collaboration with the police.
