TV shows we love: School of Chocolate by Gina Agapiou

tv shows we love

If you chewed your pencil while at school, you will be delighted to hear that Swiss chef Amaury Guichon has a much more appealing alternative! A yellow No2.HB pencil you can write with… but also eat – that is if you like lemon pie.

This was one of the lessons taught to eight professional chefs in Netflix’s School of Chocolate series. And who would have thought my favourite pastry chef and chocolatier whose videos have millions of views on Youtube would get his own cooking competition show at another streaming service?

As it turns out, Netflix know what they are doing. The end result was a real treat, giving people at home the feeling they were watching the private moments of professionals pushing their limits and thinking out of the box. This on top of some chocolate showpieces hanging from the ceiling and just enough drama results in tasty entertainment.

Classes (OK episodes) were divided into different parts. First there is the exercise of the day where Guichon teaches one of his out of this world techniques to the astounded chefs, and viewers at home. Of course, there is a major difference: binge watchers can enjoy a ready-made dessert at home, in contrast with contestants who must then put this new knowledge into their sweet creations.

And, of course, there is a twist in the judging process (no spoliers). Chocolate-lover Guichon delivers his feedback with a lot of tact and is ever so helpful to his students. But he will have a couple sitting out if he thinks they are not ready for the next challenge.

The show is ideal for chocolate lovers, baking enthusiasts and those who find Quichon’s ‘broken’ English simply adorable. I mean who wouldn’t want to eat a chocolate chameleon?
