Man nabbed at airport after swallowing drugs has expelled 81 packages so far

Larnaca district court on Saturday ordered the eight-day remand of a 19-year-old caught attempting to smuggle drugs from abroad through Larnaca airport, police said.

Drug squad Ykan commander Michalis Katsounotos said that as the suspect is currently in Larnaca hospital, he was put under guard after the remand was announced.

He was arrested on Thursday after arriving at Larnaca airport from a European country, and taken to the hospital with his written consent.

There, x-rays revealed a number of foreign objects inside his body.

“So far, the young man has expelled 81 packages that at first glance seem to contain cocaine,” Katsounotos said, adding that he will be kept in hospital until he expels all foreign objects.

Ykan is tracing the man’s steps to track down the route he took and find the recipients of the drugs in Cyprus, he added.
