Nicosia municipal pool likely shut this summer

Nicosia municipal pool is expected to remain closed this year for a revamp, provided the required funding is approved by the finance ministry, a municipal official told the Cyprus Mail on Wednesday.

The budget for the project, which will include the Olympic swimming pool, the municipal swimming pool and the diving pool, amounts to €6.5 million, most of which will be covered by the Cyprus sports organisation, Philenews reported.

“A request has been made to cover the shortfall and if approved by the ministry of finance we will proceed,” an official said when asked about the report.

An effort will be made for the works to be completed at the pool, also known as Lellos’ swimming pool, by mid-2023.

Apart from opening to the public every June, the Nicosia swimming pool also hosts about 80 per cent of the competitive sports in the swimming and water polo sector in the Nicosia district and 50 per cent of these athletes across the island, Philenews reported citing information from the Nicosia municipality.

It added that those athletes will be allocated to other districts for training.

According to the municipality, the revamp is necessary since the facility was built in the 1980s and has not been upgraded since then.
