Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu arrived in the north on Saturday night for meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leadership on Monday, reports said.

Cavusoglu is due to remain in the north until Monday afternoon after meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, the ‘prime minister’ and the ‘foreign minister’ in the morning, after which he and Tatar will hold a joint news conference before the Turkish foreign minister departs.

Discussions are expected to focus on the Cyprus issue and the new protocol signed between the north and Ankara that has Turkish Cypriots up in arms and protesting in the streets.

Cavusoglu is on Sunday afternoon due to travel to Lapithos to meet representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community there. According to reports from the north, 22 organisations were invited to the meeting including the union of journalists and hoteliers, but the bar association said it had not been invited, YeniDuzen reported.
