Two motorcyclists aged 23 and 68, killed in Nicosia accident

Two motorcyclists who were involved in a traffic accident in Nicosia died on Wednesday.

The victims were Victoras Kouroufexis, aged 23, and Christakis Kolokassides, aged 68.

According to Nicosia traffic police head Stelios Panayides around 4.05pm on Wednesday, the motorbike of the older man who was moving along Iroon Avenue in Makedonitissa, heading from the Kolokasides roundabout towards the church of Ayios Panteleimon, collided with the motorbike ridden by the 23-year-old who was heading in the opposite direction, alongside Elefsinos Street. Elefsinos is a secondary street on the right lane of the avenue.

They were both taken to the Nicosia general hospital by ambulance where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Due to the accident, Iroon Street at Makedonitissas was closed to traffic with drivers urged to use the route from 28 October Street, Ilia Pakyriakou street and Lefkotheou street.

One safety helmet was found at the scene. Police are still investigating whether one of the deceased was using a safety helmet.
