Huawei Cyprus has once again offered university undergraduates and postgraduates the opportunity to immerse themselves in cutting-edge technology, via the company’s pioneering ‘Seeds of the Future’ educational programme.

This year, the programme was significantly expanded to include three universities, to reach more students, with participation including the University of Cyprus, European University Cyprus and Frederick University.

The programme, representing Huawei’s leading global corporate social responsibility drive, gave 21 students the chance to specialise in Information Technology and Communication (ICT) solutions at the universities, further expanding their tech-sector knowledge.

Through ‘Seeds of the Future’, which once again ran online, students had the chance to expand their academic knowledge of Informatics and Communications, to be trained by leading professionals on cutting-edge technologies, and to learn about China’s tech ecosystem, while also discovering Chinese culture.

Also as part of the programme, students visited Huawei’s offices at the company’s first-ever Open Day, where the company CEO and experienced staff showed them the most recent innovations, via presentations on the core experiences and skills they would need for their future ICT careers.

The programme’s closing ceremony took place live and in person for the first time since the pandemic on June 27, 2022, at the Hilton Nicosia Hotel, in the presence of His Excellency the Ambassador of China to Cyprus, Liu Yantao. At the ceremony, students had the chance to share their experience in the programme and present their innovative ideas.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, General Manager of Huawei Cyprus Wu Hao, congratulated the group of talented students who had participated in the flagship programme. He underlined the importance that the Huawei group attaches to the development of talent in the ICT solutions sector globally.

“Huawei is investing heavily in education and technology excellence, cultivating and enhancing the skills of young students and helping them to become top professionals in their respective fields,” he noted.

The event was also attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Neophytos Papadopoulos, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Stelios Heimonas, as well as by representatives from European University Cyprus, Frederick University, and the Confucius Institute of the University of Cyprus.

During his speech, Ambassador Liu Yantao observed that “Huawei has been an important partner in Cyprus’ 5G rollout”.

“Not only has Huawei supplied Cypriot operators with the best equipment,” he continued, “but has also come up with two initiatives to support Cyprus ICT professionals.

“One is the ‘Seeds for the Future’ programme. Launched in 2016, this year the programme has been expanded to include two more universities, thus providing more students access to cutting-edge technologies and Chinese culture.

“The other one is the ‘Future Seeds Scholarship’. This April, Huawei has awarded the first batch of the Future Seeds Scholarship to Cyprus students, providing much-needed financial incentive to aspiring students.”

Permanent Secretary of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy Stelios Himonas saluted Huawei on the programme’s successful run this year, noting “I would like to start by congratulating Huawei for its long-lasting contribution to society, nurturing and empowering the tech leaders of tomorrow”.

For his part, Permanent Secretary Papadopoulos noted that: “your initiative ‘Seeds for the Future’ is definitely hitting the mark. Through it, you open a privileged window for students to witness the Huawei ecosystem and appreciate the thinking process of a technological giant shaping the future”.
