Open mic night on queerness, sexuality and gender

open mic night

An evening of sharing and listening is coming up at Kafeneion Xaratsi with  an open mic night organised by the Queer Collective Cy on July 27 and participation is open to all those interested.

Queer Collective Cyprus is a fairly new initiative aiming to celebrate, uplift, inspire, connect and unite LGBTQI+ people in Cyprus, across the divide. Since their initiation, they have organised several events including the island’s first intercommunal pride march. Their next happening is this open mic night next week with a theme on queerness, sexuality and gender.

The evening will begin at 7.30pm and though the event has a theme, there are no restrictions as to what the performance could be or in which language. The only thing that will not be tolerated is abusive language.

“Since we’re striving to create safer spaces for the community,” says Queer Collective Cyprus, “hate speech and discriminatory language will not be tolerated during this event.” Other than that, participants are invited to express and share their thoughts. Each performance must not go over four minutes and 30 seconds and participants will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Let us know if you want to have more than one slot so that we have you in mind upon availability,” adds the team. Pre-registrations can happen via the link on the Facebook event, or on the spot, right before the event, between 7pm and 7.30pm.
