Plenty of summer screenings remain for Nicosia cinephiles

Lights out, popcorn ready, roll the film! While the capital’s cultural life quietens down in August, its summer cinema thrives. Dozens of European and international independent films hit the big screen in outdoor cinema theatres so far and Constantia Theatre in Pallouriotissa continues its tradition of providing weekly film screenings from July to September and this year is the 24th time the summer movie marathon is happening.

Film screenings are on every Wednesday to Sunday at 9pm featuring productions from around the world.

Artistic Director of Theatro Ena Andreas Christodoulides describes the Summer Movie Marathon as “one of the most successful events organised by the Cultural Services of the Deputy Ministry of Culture”, adding that the response of the people is very good and that Constantia is “full every night”.

Regarding the selection criteria of the films shown, Christodoulides said an attempt is made to cover “many aspects of cinema, that is, both old, classic films and new ones that have aroused the public’s interest. We try to satisfy all tastes.” As for the origin of the films, he says that international cinema has its place of honour, with French cinema taking the lead. At the same time, certain Greek and Cypriot productions are also selected.

Christodoulides said he is impressed by people’s attendance, especially now, after the coronavirus, when they are eager to go out. “Many people do not leave Nicosia due to finances. The summer cinema is a way out,” he added.

This summer with events returning back to a sense of normality, the movie marathon runs as usual and Nicosia’s cinephiles remain thirsty for quality films. Coming up on August 24 is the Spanish drama El Buen Patron while on the following evening the award-winning film Brother’s Keeper (Okul Tirasi) will be screened. On Friday La Ρanthère des Νeiges (Snow Leopard) will take the big screen following the footsteps of a wildlife photographer and an author who are trying to spot these majestic animals.

The final two films taking place this week are Italian film A Chiara on Saturday and Les Αmours d’Anaïs on Sunday. Just under ten more film screenings remain until the movie marathon wraps up on September 10 and packs its bags until next summer. Movie nights five times a week, yes please!
