Music for the weekend

1 (1)

September’s first weekend is already here and before anyone has the chance to feel those end-of-summer blues, a series of live music gigs will uplift the spirits. Musicians are picking up their guitars and mics again for another round of rocking performances.

Tonight, at Larnaca’s popular music venue Savino Live band Stonus will return to its homeland for an exclusive show prior to their first-ever European Tour. Stonus are a desert heavy rock quintet originating from Nicosia and currently based in London. Their sound can be described as a mixture of desert, psychedelic, alternative and doom rock with pyrotechnic guitars, fuel firing solos, powerful drumming and raw dirty riffs held together by the melodic vocals and coloured by analogue equipment, complemented by high-energy live performances. To date Stonus have released three extended plays, building up to their debut album Aphasia released in 2020 which made it into several AOYT lists and got them a deal with Electric Valley Records and Daredevil Records.

This September they prepare to embark on an 11-show tour around Europe, kicking the party off with a gig in Larnaca. Doors will open at 10pm and apart from Stonus, two local bands will be the supporting acts of the night. Black Strays is a four-piece rock band that blends genres from the 70s to the 90s while Leave the Wave is a new rock band with energetic covers of 00s alternative rock with some original heavy rock songs.

In Nicosia, another local bar will welcome some of the island’s musicians to its floor. Mikri Arktos in the walled city will host the Jazz Trio: The Miaris Brothers & Co also tonight. The trio features vocalist Charlotte Storer, pianist Dimitris Miaris and guitarist Orestis Miaris. From 9.30pm onwards the musicians will bring an authentic jazz session performing treasured repertoire from jazz’s Golden Era, celebrated with hearty swing and a fiery bebop spirit.

Gears change for Saturday’s live as Amiros K brings a punk-rock vibe to the bar. The musician is part of the Amoiroi band but this week is performing solo with his own compositions as well as well-known rock covers and punk-rock songs from the Greek music scene.
