Prison guard members of the Isotita union on Tuesday announced they will go on an indefinite strike over the alleged breach of a promise concerning salary upgrades.

On Monday a general meeting of the prison guards took place during which it was unanimously decided that from September 19 they will go on an indefinite strike.

The announcement said a promise was made to them by the director general of the justice ministry Louis Panayis on behalf of minister Steffie Drakou to upgrade police pay grades.

They are also protesting after the finance ministry rejected a request for a special allowance to be paid to prison guards even after it was recommended by the justice ministry.
