Annita Demetriou to represent Cyprus at Abe funeral

Former Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

House President Annita Demetriou will depart for Japan on Sunday to attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated on July 8, 2022.

She will represent President Nicos Anastasiades.

The ceremony in memory of the late former Prime Minister will take place on Tuesday at the Nippon Budokan Stadium, in Tokyo. Demetriou will also attend an official ceremony at the Akasaka Imperial Palace, where she will convey the sincere condolences of the government and the House of Representatives to the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida and other officials.

The ceremony will be attended by heads of state and government, speakers of parliaments and high ranking officials from all over the world, including the President of the European Council Charles Michel, Prime Ministers of Canada Justin Trudeau and Vice President of the USA Kamala Harris.

On the occasion of the first visit of a Cypriot House President to Japan, Demetriou will have separate meetings with her Japanese counterpart Hiroyuki Hosoda, as well as with the Acting Chairman of the Japan-Cyprus Friendship Group in the House of Representatives of Japan Seiichiro Murakami.
