The walled section of Nicosia’s old town is set for significant upgrades after the municipality signed a €3.2m contract which envisages sustainable mobility along a promenade.
The municipality’s statement said that the project seeks to harmonise the old city with the more modern elements outside the walls.
The project is centred largely near the Oxi roundabout area, extending from the Ayios Antonios park towards Eleftheria Square.
Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis signed the contract with Cyfield on Wednesday – stating that the project will take 16 months to complete.
At the ground level, along the moat, will be the pedestrian promenade with cycling paths – connecting to the larger cycling network – with lift access to the higher points.
The higher levels will have access along a wooden deck with viewing points, benches, and three staircases.
The municipality added that landscaping changes will also be made, stating that both high and low vegetation will be planted.
The EU funded project will also install energy efficient lighting systems.
