Hellenic supports children of Kenya’s Makarios orphanage

Hot water should never be a luxury, and Sophia Foundation for Children has been taking action on this front in Kenya’s villages for many years, backed by Hellenic Bank’s constant support. This year, Hellenic also contributed to the installation of solar water heaters at the Kenya-based Makarios orphanage.

The new heaters will provide hot water to the three buildings in which the orphanage’s children live. These include a dormitory for boys, a dormitory for girls and the main building where infants and young children with special needs reside, together with the nurse and staff who look after the babies.

The project is now finished and the heaters already in operation, bringing relief and smiles to the children’s faces, as this is the coldest time of the year in Kenya, with night temperatures dropping to as low as 12 degrees Celsius. In total, four new solar water heaters have been installed, and two others have been fixed.

Hellenic is especially proud of this contribution to a project vital for the well-being of vulnerable children in Kenya. The project was necessary also for the protection of the environment and sustainable development.

The support of the programme is part of the wider framework of the Bank’s ESG strategy, as children are at the centre of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Within the same context, Hellenic supports Sophia Foundation for Children’s fundraising efforts by sponsoring cultural events, to reinforce projects aiming to improve the quality of life of children in Africa.
