Heavy rain and bouts of hail are affecting parts of Limassol and Troodos, as a police announcement on Tuesday afternoon warned drivers of dangerous conditions.

Police added that the Troodos-Karvounas, Platres-Troodos, Kalo Chorio-Agros and Gerasa-Kalo Chorio roads are still open, but urged motorists extreme caution when driving, as surfaces are very slippery due to heavy hail showers.

The bad weather has also affected areas of the highway with visibility on the Limassol-Paphos highway, especially near the Polemidia exit, very low.

“Due to torrential rains observed in many areas of Cyprus, drivers are asked to be especially careful, drive at low speeds and keep a safe distance from vehicles in front, both on highways and on mountain roads,” police said.

“Local thunderstorms are underway in several areas of the island,” the Kitas Weather portal reported.

“Severe weather is particularly affecting western Limassol and the Akrotiri peninsula, as well as the mountainous areas of the Limassol and Paphos districts.

“Another two storms are also developing near the village of Athienou and in the north-eastern part of the island,” Kitas Weather’s bulletin added.
