President Nicos Anastasiades and Lebanese Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati on Sunday discussed updating the agreement on the demarcation of each country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Government spokesman Marios Pelekanos said Anastasiades and Mikati met in the presence of Energy Minister Natasa Pilides and the Ambassador to Egypt Polis Ioannou.

The meeting was held in an extremely friendly atmosphere, Pelekanos said, and “it was found on both sides that the excellent relations can be upgraded creating multiple benefits for both countries.”

In addition to the delimitation of EEZs, cooperation on exploitation of natural gas and renewable energy sources, as well as the possibility electrical interconnection between the countries were discussed.

Anastasiades assured the Lebanese prime minister that Cyprus will take initiative within the EU to provide better financial support to Lebanon for dealing with migration flows, while the prime minister reiterated his country’s long-standing support for the Cyprus issue based on principles and values and expressed satisfaction with the successful cooperation of the two countries in matters of fire fighting.
