Authorities were investigating on Monday after a man died while in police custody over the weekend.

The death concerned a 64-year-old man who was wanted over domestic violence offences. The man was found in his house on Sunday afternoon, but media reported he attempted to escape so officers chased after him and he was arrested.

During his transfer to the police station, he told police he felt unwell and was taken to the Nicosia general hospital for examinations.

He died some hours later at the hospital.

According to reports, a family member said the 64-year-old was beaten up by the officers who arrested him.

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death. The family reportedly appointed their own coroner.
