Technopolis 20 enters 2023 with music

giorkin project
Paphos venue to stage a range of musical evenings in the first month of the year

2023 is officially here and with it, a new wave of cultural happenings arrives. In Paphos, cultural centre Technopolis 20 is preparing for a music-filled month welcoming musicians and music lovers to its grounds.

To begin the year, it is hosting a very special concert with eight young Cypriot musicians, composers and performers who go by the name the Giorkin Project. Bound together by their shared love for music and their homeland, they will showcase contemporary Cypriot music on January 6.

Composers Apollon Kalamenios, Rafaellos Christofi, Voris Sarris, Veroniki Rezai and Alexandros Darna created pieces for the ensemble consisting of Nikola Janjic on the clarinet, Marilia Andreou on viola and Phaedra Mylona on piano. In the concert, compositions of the young musicians will be presented, showing different ideas of contemporary classical music and perceptions of sound.

The next performance at Technopolis 20, puts the spotlight on classical music. Robertas Grod and Gergana Georgieva, two very active musicians, both in the concert and educational music sector in Cyprus, will hold a classical music evening concert for cello and piano on January 13. Starting at 8pm, their performance will include various works by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

Something funkier and more upbeat will take place at the Paphos venue on January 18 as the Bopsters Trio takes the floor. The ensemble is a newly formed piano trio dedicated to bebop featuring Dimitris Miaris on piano, Kyriacos Kesta on double bass and Marios Spyrou on drums. Through bebop tunes and melodies over jazz standards, they chase freedom of expression with both virtuosity and feeling.

Towards the end of the month, a recital for piano and violin will take place at Technopolis 20, with violinist Konstantina Maimari and pianist Plotinos Micromatis taking the stage. The evening of January 27 will be filled with works by E Grieg, HV Lobos, G Gershwin and by the Cypriot young composer A Antoniades to close off the first month of 2023.
