The world is slowly resuming after the mayhem that is Christmas and with one more holiday coming up on January 6, the first week of the year is a bit of a daze. Also moving at a slower pace is the island’s cultural agenda although it is picking up its energies for a new year. Events tend to run low this time of the year yet fear not, they will return in full swing in no time.
The country’s art world is busy, however, with some ongoing exhibitions and new ones taking place all around Cyprus. Since early December, Psifida Art Gallery in Paphos has been hosting a colourful exhibition by artist Achilleas Christou. Titled Spirit of a City, the exhibition will remain open until January 10 and features illustrations of cats and musicians that symbolise the artist’s own journey and experiences in the city of Paphos.
In Larnaca, the O Gallery is also currently presenting a group exhibition with seven participating artists. The Winter Group Exhibition is on until January 7 and features work by Andreas Karayan, Kelly Norman, Maria Trillidou, Panikos Tembriotis, Paskalis Anastasi, Spyros Prokopiou and Vasilis Matosian.
A new exhibition coming soon to Prozak’s Common Room looks at the experiences of women in today’s Cyprus. Running from January 11 to 31, it has an interesting title – Women Need More Sleep Because Fighting the Patriarchy is Exhausting. In it, four women who need more sleep participate and describe their experience of what it means to be a woman in Cyprus today. Alexia Nisoforou, Ermina Demetriou, Maria Loizou and Niki Lialiari invite women, men and everyone in between to explore the topic and join the conversations that surround it.
