Three speeders arrested, one doing 180 kilometres an hour (update)

Speeding

Three motorists were due in court on Thursday after traffic police caught them speeding in separate incidents.

Two of them were driving on Anexartisias Street in Nicosia on Wednesday between 10.10pm and 11.20pm at 110 and 123 kilometres per hour respectively.

They were stopped and taken to the nearest police station before being released with a court summons.

The third incident took place on the Nicosia-Larnaca highway at 9.30pm on Wednesday, where a person was caught speeding at 180 kilometres per hour near the Koshi exit where the limit is 100. He was taken to the Aradippou police station.

The Larnaca district court ordered him to pay a fine of €900. In addition to that, the man’s driving licence was suspended for 20 days and seven points were added to it.

“Speeding is one of the main causes of accidents, injuries and fatalities on our road network, as it reduces the drivers’ ability to react to emergency or unforeseen situation,” a police statement released on Thursday said.

“Strict enforcement of speed limits on out roads is a priority for the police. Daily traffic checks are carried out for the purpose of preventing such serious traffic offences.”
